No one wants to contemplate their home needing to be repiped, but sometimes it simply needs to happen. Here are some reasons why:
The Pipes Are In Violation of Code
You might have bought an old home whose plumbing pipes are found to be in violation of code. The fresh water lines, for example, might be made of galvanized pipes. People used to believe that these pipes were fairly rust proof, but this isn't true. In some locales they may be out of code. Also, the plumber might have installed an inferior type of piping that's subject to continual leakage. The pipes might even be hazardous, like lead piping used for fresh water lines.
The Pipes Are Corroded
Though pipes are supposed to last for decades, some can become corroded with rust or limescale in a surprisingly short amount of time. When they become corroded, they start to develop tiny leaks. The leaks are frustrating because right when a couple of them are repaired a few more show up, this is why it is advisable to simply conduct a repipe.
The Water Pressure Is Too Low
The corrosion not only causes leaks, but the pipes can be so clogged with rust and scale that the water pressure is reduced to a trickle. This makes your bathtub and washing machine take a long time to fill and makes your showers unsatisfying.
The Water Looks and Tastes Bad
The water might still be perfectly safe to drink, but it smells and looks so bad that you don't want to drink it, and you certainly don't want your kids to drink it.
Since repiping is such an extensive job, it should be done by a professional plumber. The plumber will need to be licensed, insured and bonded and will need to be up-to-date on any local plumbing codes. He or she will also need to obtain all permits necessary for the job.
