You Can Make a Difference During National Diabetes Awareness Month

One of the most important things that we can do for ourselves is to take care of our health, and if you have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, this is of particular importance. That’s why National Diabetes Month, which takes place every November, is so important.

Throughout the month there are a variety of events such as walks, marathons, fundraisers, and more, all aimed at promoting awareness about diabetes prevention and management.

Manage Your Diabetes Every Day

If you have diabetes, then you already know the importance of self-checks and managing the disease so that you can stay as healthy as possible. But if you have recently been diagnosed, or if you don’t have diabetes, but know someone who does, take a look at these tips for managing your diabetes day-to-day:

Eat well. The easiest way to stay healthy is to eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and to avoid refined sugars and starches.

Exercise. Going for a walk every day, taking up jogging, swimming, or playing on a sports team are all great ways to stay active and healthy.healthy-diet

Prevent Diabetes-Related Complications

It’s important to manage your diabetes and to try to avoid any complications which may arise, and which can put your health at risk.

Here are a few ways to keep complications at bay:

Check your feet. If you begin experiencing low blood circulation, which can occur as a result of diabetes, your feet will be the first place to display warning signs that something is wrong.

Drink enough water. Being properly hydrated can impact your mood, your mental abilities, and can curb snacking and unhealthy food cravings.

Surround Yourself with Support

If you’ve recently been diagnosed and are feeling like managing your diabetes is an impossible task, or if you suspect that a loved one is struggling to accept their diagnosis, seek out diabetes support groups.

Getting together on a regular basis with other people who are going through similar challenges can ease the stresses associated with diabetes, and can provide positive and inclusive opportunities to celebrate successes and support one another.

Get Involved November 14th

World Diabetes Day is November 14th, and there are lots of ways that you can get out and show your support. Whether you choose to run a marathon, buy products at a bake sale, or have a conversation with a loved one about the importance of diabetes management, taking the time out of your day to raise awareness doesn’t just help you feel good. It helps those around you live longer, happier, healthier lives.
